Solar Engineer

Full-time
Kuala Lumpur
RM 2,800 - RM 3,000

Role Summary

The Solar Engineer exists to ensure that every solar system SOLS Energy designs is technically correct, safe, optimally performing, and sustainable long-term. This role owns the technical design of assigned projects — layouts, SLDs, PE drawing inputs, and system sizing — and serves as the first line of technical troubleshooting when systems underperform or clients report issues, protecting both system quality and the company's technical credibility from design through to operations.

In this role you will:

1. System Design & Engineering

  • Prepare accurate roof layouts, Single Line Diagrams (SLDs), and PE drawings for residential and commercial solar projects, completing each within the department's 48-hour turnaround target.
  • Perform system sizing, string configuration, and cable sizing calculations to ensure every design is technically correct, safe, and optimally performing.
  • Run PVSyst simulations and validate design assumptions (shading, roof structure, orientation, tilt) before layouts are finalised.
  • Ensure Bill of Materials (BOM) accuracy for every project, preventing wrong sizing, overdesign, or rework at installation stage.
  • Provide technical inputs to support PE submissions and ensure designs comply with relevant authority and safety standards.

2. Troubleshooting & Technical Diagnostics

  • Investigate and resolve customer-reported technical issues, ensuring first response within 1 working day and full resolution within 1 week.
  • Conduct root cause analysis for underperforming or faulty systems and classify system health accurately.
  • Recommend and execute the correct repair approach for identified faults, escalating high-impact cases (fire risk, structural concerns, unsafe installations, large warranty claims) to the Technical Manager.
  • Monitor live systems for alarms and offline status, prioritising subscription clients to prevent extended downtime.
  • Keep all client-reported issues and resolutions logged and updated in HubSpot in a timely manner.

3. Site & Field Technical Support

  • Conduct site visits and drone inspections according to the scheduled roster to verify installation quality and system performance.
  • Perform final technical reviews prior to installation when required, catching design or site issues before they reach the field team.
  • Document site visit findings clearly in HubSpot with the appropriate person-in-charge tagged for follow-up.

4. Documentation & Systems Discipline

  • Maintain organised, up-to-date drawings and CDR files in Dropbox for every project handled.
  • Update property records and task statuses in HubSpot promptly once layouts, PE drawings, or SLDs are completed.
  • Review the daily dashboard to ensure no pending layouts, SLDs, drone tasks, or monitoring alerts are left unaddressed.

5. Cross-Department Collaboration

  • Work closely with Sales to clarify roof layouts, answer client-facing technical questions, and review drone imagery of client properties.
  • Coordinate with Operations and Installation to hand over accurate roof layouts, SLDs, and PE drawings, and confirm acknowledgement rather than assuming the handover is complete.
  • Maintain clear, proactive communication with other departments so no technical issue or pending task is left unresolved.

To be shortlisted for this position, you will need to have:

Essential

  • Diploma or Degree in Electrical, Electronics, or Renewable Energy Engineering (or a closely related field).
  • Working knowledge of solar PV system design principles: system sizing, string configuration, cable sizing, and layout optimisation.
  • Proficiency with PVSyst (or equivalent solar design software) and AutoCAD or similar drafting tools.
  • Understanding of relevant Malaysian electrical and solar installation standards and safety requirements.
  • Strong troubleshooting and root-cause analysis skills, with the ability to diagnose underperforming or faulty systems.
  • Comfortable conducting site visits and working with field-collected data (drone imagery, site photos, structural notes).

Preferred

  • Prior experience in residential or commercial solar PV design, commissioning, or after-sales technical support.
  • Familiarity with solar monitoring platforms (e.g. SolarEdge, Huawei FusionSolar, or equivalent).
  • Drone piloting certification or experience conducting drone-based site inspections.
  • Exposure to HubSpot or similar CRM/project tracking systems.
  • Registered or working toward relevant technical competency certification (e.g. Suruhanjaya Tenaga requirements).

What's great about this opportunity?

  • Work in an agile-driven environment alongside a diverse team that supports professional growth.
  • Contribute directly to improving the lives of B40 communities, as part of a #madetoimpact organization.
